Malta and Sicily Baseball Road Trip
August 5-16, 2021
The smallest country in the European Union, Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It's a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of Saint John, French and British. It has mighty fortifications built by the Knights of Malta and the British, megalithic temples pre-dating Egypt's pyramids, Roman ruins, opulent churches, and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum (a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers dating to circa 4000 B.C.). And now we are going there to play baseball!
Malta's is located in the center of the Mediterranean
Malta's geographical location in the center of the Mediterranean made it a much fought over prize and the islands are full of majestic ground defenses. The capital, Valletta, built by the Knights of St John, is a harmonious grid, Medina and Victoria are fortress-like hilltop towns, and watchtowers dot the coast. Even Malta’s fishing boats resonate with the past, their prows painted with eyes, just like the boats of their Phoenician predecessors. Sound interesting? Then here's your chance! Plans will soon be finalized for our baseball road trip to Malta, so now is the time to gear up if you plan to join us. Offering extensive sightseeing and baseball camaraderie, we will soon be signing up players for this exciting trip, so don't miss out.
Probably the single most dramatic episode in Malta’s past was the Great Siege of 1565, a dramatic battle fought between around 700 besieged Knights and a huge invading Ottoman army. The Knights employed some grisly tactics, including using human heads a cannonballs, but after four months they defeated the Turks and were hailed as saviors of Europe. Two of the Knights’ key defensive forts remain today: Fort St Elmo in Valletta, which has been restored and transformed into the National War Museum, and the imposing Fort St Angelo in Vittoriosa.
